The Waters That Shape Us [SQ4]
Raw linen as the ground — sandy ochre, the colour of riverbed and dried grass. A wide sweep of blue-grey moving across the composition with the authority of water that knows where it is going, edged in gold where the light catches the surface. A single dark tendril of Moreton Bay Fig standing vertical against all that horizontal movement, and the looping net marks scattered through the midground — cool, luminous, spacious. This is a painting about the way our landscapes hold us, and shape everything we build within them.
The original was created with oil paints and beeswax on Belgian linen — the layering of paint and the texture of the natural linen carry through beautifully into every print. The work began as an investigation into Brisbane's river: the memory it holds, the landscape it shaped, the structures that grew around it. Since 2018, Dr Sarah Daly has used generative AI as a lens — a dialogue between artist and machine about what pattern reveals when it is all you allow yourself to see.
